Bruh. I am still pissed over Zbrush. Originally, like, yes, large fee - 700 hundo - but it gave you a perpetual license for, like, a lifetime. Free updates, learning material, physical copies of the software if requested, maintenance support, and continual research and development (where the updates were HUGE, btw). Only with the recent acquisition of Pixologic by Maxon (peeps behind Cinema4D, y'know, the one that isn't Maya, 3DSMax, Blender, or Unreal) did all that go away with a new subscription policy.
Wasn’t it like the same with Autdodesk Maya cause I remember when it being like free or at the least free for students and like during 2020 they’re like pay me $$$
Not to mention Autodesk is like a Virus you can’t get that shit off your computer 😭 I remember when I was done using it for my 3D courses I was trying to uninstall it and like did not want to leave

Its open-source, free nature makes it accessible to a wide range of users, contributing to its growing adoption. Blender offers a comprehensive toolset, covering modeling, animation, rendering, and more, making it an all-in-one solution for 3D production. While traditionally software like Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max have dominated the industry, Blender is gaining traction, especially among independent creators and small studios due to its cost-effectiveness and active community support. However, Blender still faces challenges in larger studios, where established workflows and software preferences make integration difficult. Furthermore, its extensive features can overwhelm professionals accustomed to other tools. Despite these challenges, I think Blender’s influence continues to grow, making it an increasingly significant software in the 3D industry.
I think Blender is expanding rapidly in the 3D community. It's open-source and free, making it accessible to everyone. This removes financial barriers to entry, allowing you to develop professional-level skills without needing to invest in expensive software licenses. It has a large, active community that constantly shares tutorials, add-ons, and tips. This makes it easier to learn and stay updated with new features and techniques. The wealth of free learning resources available online further supports self-guided education. Considering the benefits of this software, I think in the future, I will invest time in learning and implementing it in my workflow.

Blog 27 - FMP
As part of my pre-production research for the Final Major Project, I decided to learn about XGen. Although I was new to this tool, I was determined to learn how to create realistic hair for my characters. I conducted thorough research into the basics of XGen. I referred to the official Autodesk Maya website, where I found a guide on interactive grooming with XGen. This guide not only provided me with documentation but also gave me valuable insights into the various features and functionalities of XGen.
In addition to this, I watched a YouTube video by Flipped Normals, which focused on the fundamental tools needed to get started with XGen. This video covered everything from setting up files for XGen to creating descriptions and collections, and even manipulating hair guides. By following the tutorial, I experimented with hair creation on a sphere.

I am embarking on a project to create apocalyptic 3D assets that capture the essence of a post-catastrophe world, featuring elements of destroyed concrete buildings and fragments of concrete with steel wires protruding. These assets will initially be crafted in low poly format using Autodesk Maya, focusing on the fundamental shapes and structures of the devastated environment.
After establishing the basic forms, I will import these models into ZBrush to develop the high poly versions. Here, I will utilize a variety of alphas and brushes to sculpt realistic surfaces and intricate details that enhance the apocalyptic feel. Following this, I will transfer the models into Substance Painter, where I will create, tweak, and bake all high-resolution textures, developed earlier in Substance Designer, onto the models.
The final phase of my project involves importing all the environmental elements into Unreal Engine 5. In this advanced platform, I will recreate a cinematic atmosphere, culminating in a short piece of cinematography that showcases the hauntingly beautiful, apocalyptic environment I've envisioned and meticulously crafted.

After receiving feedback in class regarding Gretel's unarmoured legs, I resolved to address this by incorporating sci-fi panel lines into her design. This addition implies that she possesses metal plating or armour beneath her skin, or alternatively, that her skin may be composed of painted metal plates.
Weapon Concepts!
In addition to character design, I've crafted a selection of weaponry for our characters, including an SMG, machine pistol, and heavy pistol. To expedite the design process, I utilized a side view approach, allowing for quick sketching and iteration.
While I aimed to imbue these weapons with personalized touches such as stickers, paintjobs, or decals, time constraints prevented me from fully realizing this vision. Regrettably, I had to prioritize other concept art tasks, but I remain open to revisiting and enhancing the weapons' aesthetics in the future.
Further Notes
When finding reference images, I discovered a many new artists I really liked and felt inspired by. One in particular I felt was pushing the bar on 'amazing weapon concept art'. Daniel Kenton.
Some of his work that really impressed me:
It's not surprising that I was impressed by his work, considering he has contributed to multiple Call of Duty titles, including Black Ops: Cold War in 2020 and Modern Warfare 2 in 2022. His designs definitely carry a sci-fi Call of Duty flair.
What struck me most was his ability to transform classic weapons like the AK and M4 into futuristic masterpieces. Not only is the shaping artfully done, but the weapons also maintain a practical, function-over-form design, which I personally prefer in concept art. Additionally, the detailed hard surface work on the guns is exceptionally well-executed.
I learned that Dan uses a combination of 3ds Max, Fusion 360, and Zbrush to craft these weapons. While I'm familiar with Zbrush, I haven't used Fusion 360 and 3Ds Max as much, although my experience with Maya, which is quite similar to 3Ds Max, has been extensive.
Dan Kenton is definitely an artist I'll continue to watch closely in the coming years.

Maya is a 3D modelling program which i'm using in my course - it's similar to programs such as blender and allows advanced 3d modelling and animation ready for import into ue5
The extrude tool allows you to protrude a section of your model outwards from the surface
And the Multi Cut Tool runs with the extrude tool well, as it allows you to cut the shape into multiple sections along an axis

Assignment 1: Week 2
After I had done my first face sculpt from scratch, and after I had received some input on my work during class, I decided to research the more recent methods of creating human characters for games. I first started by exploring MetaHuman Creator and understanding how it works by playing with all the diffrent parameters. I then learned how to import Metahumans into the Unreal Engine through Quixel Bridge, and observed how these characters adapt with the changes of the environment they are put in, through different lighting conditions. For this, I used the MetaHumans project provided by Epic Games, and I imported my own character into the scene. By watching different videos and reading multiple articles online, I gained a sort of understanding of the many ways MetaHumans can be customized or altered in other software to fit the needs of game design and development. From Zbrush to Autodesk Maya and Marvelous Designer, a variety of tools can be used to create custom features, hair, and clothing to fit your concept.
To get a better understanding of realistic hair creation for video games, I decided to learn XGen inside Autodesk Maya. I followed a few tutorials on Youtube to get an overall idea of the workflow and jumped right into familiarizing myself with the different tools and modifiers available. FlippedNormals' "Introduction to XGen - Quick Start Guide" laid out the basics of the tool for me, while J HilI's "How to Make DOPE CG HAIR | XGen Tutorial" video acted as a deep dive into the art of realistic hair. I ended up coming across many issues related to UVs which helped me understand better the technical part of how XGen hair is formed, and its connection to the base mesh's texture. Making the hair look realistic was difficult, as controlling guides and the hair's directions were very tricky. In the end, presenting my progress during class gave me a better insight into the techniques used in the industry today, as I was informed that the more optimized way of creating hair for games using Xgen is through hair cards.
Even though I did not have a polished product to present at the end of my first assignment, I made sure to use the first two weeks wisely to practice and learn as recommended by my course instructor. This assignment's duration acted as a learning curve and cleared many misconceptions I had regarding character creation for video games. Following this experience, I realised that I did not want to specialise as a character artist already, as I don't have the required experience just yet. I did not want to limit my learning options by confining my practice to one specific field in the world of 3D art. For this reason, I chose to start by practising the basics in the following weeks by creating game assets and environments, as well as familiarising myself with the Unreal Engine.

While playing Sandstorm Insurgency last night a guy relayed a story about getting CV but recovering and is now on meds to boost his immune system but sadly he got the Flu (he was very congested over the mic). The highlight of his story was not that CV and then the flu had been a lot of sickness and pain but the claim that his "immune boosting meds" caused a significant case of "anal leakage." He sounded defiant about it all but was glad he had some medicine, any medicine, to help get him back into life, routines, etc. Others in game repeatedly told him to stfu and he was a troll, etc but I found it an entertaining story. I am currently at the mid-point of the flu myself so I can feel some of his discomfort, minus unpleasant side effects. Such interesting people.
